The Board of Directors of the Barton Springs-Edwards Aquifer Conservation District has approved updates to the District’s drought chart. The revisions are designed to improve clarity, simplify the graphic, and make it easier for the public to understand.
Importantly, the threshold levels for each drought stage—based on Barton Springs flow and groundwater levels at the Lovelady monitor well—will remain unchanged. The primary modifications include:
- Updated colors representing each drought stage
- Revised numbering of drought stages
- The current “Stage I: No Drought” Will be renamed to “Water Conservation Period
- Roman numerals will be replaced with standard numbers for each drought stage
To support the transition, communication materials will be shared with District permittees to help them inform their end-users of the changes.
As part of the update, the District’s current drought status, Stage III Critical Drought, will automatically become Stage 2 Critical Drought beginning September 1. You can view all of the recent updates to the District’s Rules and Bylaws here.
